Lowell Makes Visits the New England Quilt Museum

Quilt Museum

On August 9, a group of Lowell Makes members enjoyed a special outing arranged by Membership Committee Chair, Dylan Lavender—a guided tour of the New England Quilt Museum in Downtown Lowell.

The featured exhibition, Quilts Japan: The 17th Quilt Nihon, showcased award-winning quilts and textile arts from some of the world’s most accomplished artists. These extraordinary works had previously been displayed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and will not return for another two years, making this a rare and exciting opportunity for our members.

Some of the stunning quilts that were on display:

For over a decade, the New England Quilt Museum has been the exclusive Northeast host for this celebrated international exhibition. Sponsored by the Japanese Handicraft Instructors’ Association (JHIA), Quilt Nihon is Japan’s largest international quilt contest and one of the most prestigious in the world. This year’s display featured 53 stunning quilts, including 18 entries from the competition’s newest category—miniature quilts. Each piece highlighted exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and a deep connection to textile traditions.

During our visit, Docent Linda guided us through the museum, bringing each quilt’s story and artistry to life. Her insights made the experience all the more engaging and memorable.

“We had great attendance, and a huge thank you to the NEQM. Docent Linda really brought the museum to life. A repeat visit is surely in our future.”
