Woodshop

The LM Woodshop is a 3,000 sq ft space featuring a lathe room, bench room, finishing room and a power equipment room. A fully equipped woodshop serves the project needs from the beginner to the professional woodworker and all experience levels are welcome to join the shop. Half our members come in with no woodworking skills but plenty of ideas, so whether you are an experienced professional, an eager newbie, or anywhere in between, you’ll fit right in!

What’s in the woodshop?

The woodshop has a huge number of tools ranging from professional heavy equipment to simple hand tools and everything in between! Check out the lists below to see what we have available.

Woodshop Equipment List

Rikon Tools

In 2020, Rikon Tools, one of our corporate sponsors, donated several new power tools to the Lowell Makes Woodshop. These tools included: a 25” wide planer, two bandsaws, two drill presses, an edge sander, disc and belt sanders, blade sharpening equipment and dust collection for all of it! In the lathe room, Rikon Tools also donated 2 full size lathes and 4 mid-sized benchtop lathes. All the Rikon Tools are listed below.

Large Equipment

We’ve got a ton of power tools in the woodshop. Check out all the equipment we have available to our members!

Finish Room

The woodshop features an entire room dedicated to finish work. This dust free environment has filtration, fans, and dedicated work tables and saw horses.

Lathe Room

One portion of the woodshop is apportioned off to be the Lathe Room. It is outfitted with several wood-turning lathes of various sizes.

WSAC

The Wood Shop Advisory Committee, or WSAC, is a group of Lowell Makes woodworkers who help make decisions to improve and maintain the LM woodshop. They host regular meetings where the discuss the woodshop’s future and make decisions regarding budget, classes, storage, layout, tools, checkouts and more. If you are interested in having a voice in the LM Woodshop, consider joining WSAC.

Storage Rental Options

The Woodshop has several different storage rental options for members. These spaces can be used for project storage, materials, tools or even as private workspaces. The cost of these spaces is dependent on the size and style of the storage and the majority of proceeds from storage rentals go directly to the woodshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store a project in the shop while working on it?

Most projects need to be taken home with you and cannot be stored in the shop. For long term storage, we have some options available for rent. If you are waiting for glue or finish to dry and can store your project out of the way, you can leave it in the shop for up to 24hrs. It must be labelled with name and contact info. For longer stretches of time, you must make arrangements and get permission from the Shop Captain. These requests cannot always be accommodated.

What do I do if a tools is broken or not working correctly?

Report the issue to a Shop Captain immediately and do not use the tool. Do NOT attempt to repair the tool unless you’ve been given explicit permission.

How do I get started using the the Woodshop?

A checkout is required for all members before they can use the woodshop. Click here to learn more about the woodshop checkout.

Can I bring in a friend to help me in the woodshop?

Only members who have been checked out in the woodshop may use the tools. You may bring in a guest, but they are your responsibility and they are not allowed to use any of the tools or equipment.

Checkout Info

The Machine Shop requires a series of checkouts in order to start using the equipment. Each tool either has its own checkout or is included in the General Shop Checkout. Current individual tool checkouts include:
