Make a Set of River Coasters
June 20 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until June 27, 2019
In this workshop, you will create a set of four stunning hardwood coasters with custom poured epoxy rivers running through them. Your guests will marvel at their beauty, and may hesitate to put their drinks down!
For the first session (June 20th, 7pm), all materials will be provided, starting with hardwood planks long enough for four coasters (walnut, cherry, and other varieties), each with a gently winding river pre-carved into the wood using Lowell Makes’ XCarve CNC router.
You will then fill that river with epoxy and mix in pigments or dyes in colors of your choice. You can make the colors gradually transition from the first coaster outline to the last, or make each entirely distinct. Add texture with small pieces of stone, or swirl in bits of glittery pigment for a sparkly or metallic effect.
After the first session, we let the epoxy cure, then give the coasters a few passes through our wood shop’s drum sander to level the tops, then cut the coasters from the backing board on the XCarve for you.
When you return for the second session on June 27th, you’ll sand the coasters to bring out the clarity and shine, apply a coat of protective varnish, and glue on non-skid cork backing. Your coasters will be ready to take home that night, and we’ll provide you with a small bottle of extra varnish for you to apply at home for extra protection.
If you prefer, let us handle the sanding and finishing step and we can arrange a pick up time (extra charge).
